Quimper Faïence
Quimper pottery is a famous hand-painted, tin-glazed earthenware produced in Quimper, France.
Founded in 1690 by Jean-Baptiste Bousquet in the historic Locmaria district. The main historic operation continues production as Henriot Quimper under owner Jean-Pierre Le Goff, who purchased it in 2011. While newer workshops like the 1994 Faïencerie d'Art Breton now operate outside the historic center, Locmaria remains the cultural hub, hosting both the active factory and a dedicated museum. Today, the pottery's naive 1870s "petit breton" peasant motifs remain heavily favored by tourists, while older, antique pieces continue to command high value from collectors worldwide.
When purchasing original pieces, look for these attributes and marks:
Hand-painted in bright blues, yellows, greens, and soft reds on an ivory or white base.
Authentic vintage and antique pieces feature handwritten maker marks on the bottom (such as HB, HR, or Henriot Quimper).

The Climate
Quimper is an excellent refuge for anyone wanting to escape the intense heatwaves that frequently hit southern and central France. Known for its notoriously rainy and temperate oceanic climate, the city typically enjoys very comfortable summer averages of around 72°F to 75°F (22°C to 24°C). While it is not entirely immune to extreme weather -temperatures can still occasionally spike into the 80s or low 90s during severe nationwide heatwaves - it remains significantly cooler and more breathable than the rest of the country.

Is Quimper Right for You?
Life in Quimper offers an authentic slice of French provincial living, but with a deeply distinct Celtic twist. This is not standard corporate or cosmopolitan France; this is Brittany. To truly integrate here, speaking French is non-negotiable for daily survival, and a genuine passion for Breton heritage -from its traditional music to its distinct architecture - is essential. The city caters to those who prioritize cozy market mornings, outdoor coastal exploration, and rich history over a loud nightlife scene. If you are comfortable with frequent rain and eager to embrace a fiercely proud regional identity, Quimper will feel like home.
